Course info
Microbes have always had more effect on world events than politicians or generals. Through examples and case studies, we will examine the interaction of human behaviour with the biology of disease in the past, present, and future. Examples will range from the Athenian Plague, the Black Death and the end of feudalism in Europe, to the 20th century influenza pandemics and the effects of AIDS on society both in the West and in sub-Saharan Africa. We will also examine the role of science and scientists and the interaction between science, society and politics.

How much will it cost?
The 2008 tuition fee for the full eight-week Summer School (36 credits) is £2,050; or £1,080 for one 18 credit, four-week course. In addition, some courses have a lab fee or a field trip fee. We must receive an application fee of £100 by 1 April 2008, which is not refundable unless a course is cancelled. Payment in full (less the £100 application fee) is required by 15 June 2008. Payment for accommodation (£86/week or £113/week) is also required by 15 June. Students must submit the relevant fees by the required date in order to register. Sussex does not offer facilities for deferred payment of fees.
